Woljeong-ri Station

Woljeong-ri Station

월정리역

Located near the DMZ in Cheorwon County, Gangwon Province, Woljeong-ri Station is a stark reminder of the horrors of the Korean War and the continued division of the Korean Peninsula today. A rusted bombed out locomotive sits on the tracks of this abandoned station, which once ferried people to the gorgeous Geumgangsan Mountains. The station sign reads, “The iron horse wants to run again”, a somber reminder of the peninsula’s division and hope that better relations between the two Koreas will allow the station to function again and the iron horse to continue its journey northward. Because the station is located inside the Civilian Control Zone, foreign visitors are required to bring their passport for an identification check. Those who do not bring their passport will not be allowed to tour the station. A tour needs to be booked in advance through Cheorwon County in order to enter.
