Administrative and Historical Center of Seoul

Main sights: Deoksugung Palace, City Hall, Myeongdong, Namdaemun

Located in the heart of Seoul, Junggu is a historical, cultural, political and administrative center of the city. Seoul City Hall is easily the most recognizable place in Korea. The oval square in front of the building has been historically used by Seoul citizens as a place of protest and celebration. Here the people came together to celebrate the 2002 World Cup and to cheer for the team in 2018, here they stood their ground during the Korean independence movement in 1919 and the protest against impeached president Park Geun-hye in 2017.

Surrounding the City Hall are some of the most important places in Seoul: Deoksugung Palace, Namdaemun Gate and the shopping mecca of Myeongdong. Together with the neighboring district of Jongno, Junggu is the historical center of Seoul and its most interesting part.
