Main sights: Dongnimmun, Ansan Sequoia Forest, Seodaemun Prison History Hall
Seodaemun, literally meaning "The Great West Gate", is an area built around one of the four gates of the capital of Joseon - Hanyang (modern Seoul). Unfortunately, the gate was destroyed, but the name stuck.
Seodaemun is a middle- and upper-class residential area with a number of historic and cultural sites scattered around. Seodaemun Prison now turned museum, was opened in 1908 under the Japanese colonial regime and served to incarcerate Korean liberation activists. After Korea gained independence, the prison was used for general criminals up until 1987, and was later turned into the memorial and history museum it is now.
Next to the Sewodaemun Prison Museum stands another independence memorial - the Dongnimmun, or Independence, Gate. It was built to inspire the Korean people after the long history of oppression by the Chinese and became the symbol of liberation during the Japanese rule.
Despite its grueling history, the district has a lively and youthful vibe. Sharing with the neighboring district of Mapo the student towns surrounding Ewha and Yonsei Universities, Seodaemun offers cheap shopping, fun nightlife, and some cheap housing.
