Hotel Soonsunhwa is not a hotel. It’s a cafe/bar based in Euljiro that also houses the studios of three small clothing labels and has quickly emerged as a local hotspot since it opened in December 2015. Located on the top floor of an aging office building, it’s the type of spot that wouldn’t be out of place in a city like Berlin. The owners of the cafe have maintained its original cold, gray cement walls, which exude a more industrial feel, while filling the space with warm antique lighting, wooden tables, basic metal folding chairs, and various artworks and trinkets to give it a cozy, casual vibe. Its menu is extensive, with plenty of hard-to-find imported beers and wine, as well as an interesting array of cocktails, the usual fare of coffee and tea, and a decent selection of appetizers.
Hotel Soonsunhwa draws a diverse set of customers, ranging from students meeting to get a project done to old friends looking to chat over a nice bottle of wine. Off in the corner of the space is the shared studio of three small local fashion labels, Pi Seoul, Beatnika, and Kyyn the Garten, which specialize in clothing, bags, jewelry, and various other designs. Each of these labels has some of their latest pieces on display for sale. Flea markets, art exhibitions, and parties are also held from time to time to help bring together Euljiro’s expanding art community. But be warned, Hotel Soonsunhwa can get pretty packed on weekends.
