Yukhoe is a traditional Korean delicacy of raw beef that dates back to the Joseon Dynasty. Thin slices of raw beef are seasoned with salt, soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil and other spices, and often served with an egg yolk cracked on top and thinly sliced strips of pear. When Seoullites crave this tender, delicious dish, they head over to Gwangjang Market's Yukhoe Alley located in the heart of Seoul in Jongno.
Yukhoe Alley only comprises about five restaurants, but each one of them serves some of the highest quality yukhoe in the country. While your average yukhoe restaurant tends to serve defrosted beef, the ones in Gwangjang Market serve only the freshest beef, with each of the restaurants' owners waking up at the crack of dawn to pick out the freshest cuts from the cattle markets. It's this level of attention and care to the quality of their yukhoe that attracts so many customers throughout the week, with long lines winding through the narrow alleyway just to get a table at one of these restaurants, one of which has a Michelin rating.
Each restaurant serves a variety of yukhoe dishes, ranging from just classic yukhoe to yukhoe tang-tang-e, which is a combination of yukhoe and raw octopus, to yukhoe bibimbap. Because these restaurants are regularly packed, it may take some time for your order to come, but each restaurant provides plenty of banchan as well as a free bowl of beef radish stew so you won't starve to death while waiting for your order. Yukhoe Alley is a must-go and the perfect way to experience some of Korea's most authentic and finest foods.
