The Tastiest, Biggest and Oldest of Seoul's Traditional Markets

Gwangjang Market

광장시장

There’s nothing like the vibrancy, aroma, and hustle of traditional markets in Korea. Conveniently located in Seoul’s city center, right outside Jongno 5-ga Station, Gwangjang Market is a throwback to yesteryear; a classic-style market with tons of food stalls and restaurants to try out. If you’re a foodie, you won’t want to miss out on the famous Gwangjang Market.

Gwangjang Market is most famous for its Yukhoe Alley, a narrow alleyway of restaurants serving raw beef that attracts hordes of customers in the evening. These restaurants are highly-regarded amongst Seoul diners, with one of them, Bukchon Yukhoe, having even earned a Michelin rating. There are also tons of food stalls in the center of the market, offering a host of different foods such as bindaetteok, a kind of fried pancake made from mung bean, sundae, a type of blood sausage, with glass noodles stuffed inside pig intestines, and mayak (drug) kimbap, an incredibly addictive seaweed rice wrap stuffed with vegetables.

As you stroll by the market’s numerous food stalls, vendors will call out to you to try their food. Find what looks appealing or be adventurous and choose the more bizarre option – up to you. While the market is best known for its food, further down the market, towards Jongno 3-ga, are shops selling traditional hanbok and high-quality textiles. There are also stores selling souvenirs and various other traditional goods, as well as clothing, shoes, and bags.
