Deoksugung Stonewall Road stretches approximately 900 meters, snaking around the walls of Seoul’s iconic Deoksugung Palace. It’s an incredibly scenic road lined with tall trees and various sculptures and artworks exhibited along the pathway, a cozy, quiet place to escape the noise and chaos of central Seoul. It’s especially picturesque in the Fall, when the leaves change color, attracting hordes of people to what is normally a quaint, quiet area. The area was traditionally home to foreign embassies and various government buildings and civil courts, but many have moved from the area, with small museums and theaters popping up, as well as cafes and restaurants. Deoksugung Stonewall Road was also the subject of Girls’ Generation member Yoona’s solo debut track, recorded with famous Korean indie band 10cm.
The road has a very romantic atmosphere and it’s very common to see couples going for a stroll during the Spring or Fall. However, this wasn’t always the case. Many couples used to avoid the road because of rumors that those who walked down it would split up. This was largely because the Seoul Family Court was located along the road, meaning that people seeking a divorce would have to walk down the Deoksugung Stonewall Road to their divorce proceedings. The court moved in 1995, and its building is now occupied by the Seoul Museum of Art.
