SM Entertainment is one of Korea’s largest music labels, home to world-famous idol groups EXO, Red Velvet, Girls’ Generation, Super Junior, and SHINee. Founded as a small studio in Apgujeong in 1989 by former singer Lee Soo-Man, it morphed into a major label by the late-1990’s with the success of its groups H.O.T. and SES and has since become Korea’s premier K-Pop label. Because of the label’s massive growth, SM decided to move its headquarters from its original aging building in Apgujeong to a much larger and more modern facility in the heart of Seoul’s posh Cheongdam neighborhood.
While most of the building is off-limits to visitors, SM has set up a few areas that are open for fans to check out. In the basement of the building is the SUM Market, a special convenience store that stocks various snacks branded with SM’s most famous idol groups, as well as albums and small souvenirs that can’t be found anywhere else. Taking up the entire first floor is the SUM Cafe, where visitors can grab some coffee and freshly baked cakes. An open kitchen area allows guests to watch the bakers’ carefully craft these delicious cakes which come in numerous flavors. On the right side of the cafe is a restaurant serving various brunch items. There’s also a small duty-free shop selling high-end SM-related goods tucked away in the upper left-hand corner of the space. And who knows? You might even be able to catch a glimpse of your favorite star passing through.
