Uireung Royal Tomb is a UNESCO World Heritage Historic Site, a rarity in most major cities. The Royal Tomb was built for the 20th ruler of the Joseon Dynasty, King Gyeongjong and his second wife, Queen Seonui. Gyeongjong's rule was short, lasting only four years from 1720 to 1724, because of poor health. Uireung Royal Tomb differs from the other royal tombs for couples, because the two structures are not placed side-by-side, but rather one behind the other. Also, the layout of the tomb is a good example of how Koreans during the Joseon Dynasty did their best to protect the natural environment when building such structures.
