Squeezed in between the towering office blocks of Gangnam, Dosan Park is a calm green space built to commemorate the achievements of Korean independence activist Ahn Chang-ho. Ahn - who wrote under the name Dosan - was an independence activist, political reformer, and educator. Ahn was one of the early leaders of the Korean-American immigrant community in the United States, a key member of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea, and founder of the Shinminhoe - the New Korea Society - an important independence organization that opposed Japanese occupation. Ahn is also one of two men believed to have written the lyrics of the Aegukga, the South Korean national anthem.
Dosan Park was built up in 1973 when Dosan Ahn Changho’s tomb was moved from Manguri Public Cemetery and reunited with his wife's tomb (moved from Los Angeles). Apart from the tombs, the complex also hosts an important historical collection of Ahn's photos, letters, documents, and diaries. Admission into the park and the memorial hall is free.
Connected to trendy, bustling Gangnam hotspots such as Garosu-gil and Apgujeong Rodeo Street, Dosan Park is a place where travelers and shoppers can rest and take a break during a long day of shopping and walking. The park is also a favorite hangout for many Korean celebrities working in the area. Former Wonder Girls members Sunmi and Ye-eun used to spend their free time here, and it was also featured in MBC's show "Infinite Challenge".
Dosan Park also forms part of a famous upscale shopping area. Though less well-known to foreign visitors compared to nearby Apgujeong Rodeo or Garosu-gil, the streets surrounding the park have their fair share of luxury brands and fine-dining restaurants: Maison Hermes, Ralph Lauren, Marc Jacobs, Paul Smith, Jimmy Choo, and many others line the nearby alleys.
