Located in the posh Gangnam neighborhood of Sinsa-dong, Garosu-gil is one of Seoul’s most popular and famous shopping destinations, with tons of chic boutiques, cafes, restaurants, bars, and studios lining this street and its surrounding back alleys. The numerous boutiques on the main street and surrounding side alleys stock a pleasantly surprising mix of imported brands and original creations by young Korean designers, making this a much more unique shopping experience compared to other commercial areas in Seoul.
The district started to emerge in the 1980’s when many designers, artists, and stylists returned to Korea from their studies abroad in Europe and the United States, transforming the area into a sort of commercial, bohemian neighborhood a la Soho in New York. Its name translates as “Tree-lined Street”, offering a nice green respite from the hyper-urbanism that defines most of the Gangnam district. The area has attracted the attention of many major global brands, most notably Apple, who opened their first-ever store in Korea on Garosu-gil in January 2018.
