The Center of Seoul's Youth Culture

Hongdae is an area north of the Han River, where trendy youth and underground artists converge to create what must be one of the most exotic ambiances in Seoul. The name ‘Hongdae’ comes from one of the prestigious art universities, Hongik University, and the area of the campus provides a distinctively artsy vibe. The district overflows with unique themed cafes, small galleries, cheap rowdy bars and clubs that cannot be found anywhere else in Seoul.

The development of Hongdae as we know it began in the 1990s when prestigious Hongik University with its famous art college started to attract poor young artists, aspiring musicians and other bohemian crowds with its cheap rent and rising popularity. Despite the recent gentrification and booming estate prices, Hongdae still manages to maintain its unique image: in 2016 it has been named one of the coolest neighborhoods in the world by the "How I Travel" magazine.
