Stationery Alley is a bit of a deceiving name, but not in a bad way. It’s home to not just stationery stores, selling things such as pens, notebooks, and gift wrapping, but many art supplies stores stocking tons of cheap canvas, paints, watercolors, brushes, etc. There are both small independent stores and chains selling all the top art supply brands and many of these stores are stocked to the ceiling with canvas. It's an artist's paradise. This street brings together a wide variety of people; Art students looking for the best deals on supplies for their projects and works, office workers looking for various supplies to keep their office functioning, students looking for the coolest pens and notebooks to show off to their friends at school, and others looking for the fanciest gift wrapping to impress their friends and loved ones with for all types of special occasions.
The history of Stationery Alley goes all the way back to the 1970's when the first Alpha, one of Korea's main office supply store chains, opened its first store in Namdaemun Market, which remains its flagship and largest store. This four-story-tall Alpha is a bit different from its other stores. While most Alpha stores mainly stock plain old office supplies, their megastore in Namdaemun Market is filled to the brim with all types of stationery and art supplies that will leave you exploring the store for hours on end. Smaller stores dot the alleyways next to Alpha's flagship store selling mainly gift wrapping, gift bags, and cards, while across the street are a number of art supply stores that are more appealing to serious artists such as Namdaemun Art Supplies, Sinhan Art Supplies, and Morningglory.
