Jangsu Galbi is a Myeongdong institution, having been open since 1968. Its name derives from the famous Jangsu Galbi dish, a delicacy originating from the sparsely populated Jangsu county in North Jeolla Province. It serves a very minimal but delicious menu of galbi, bulgogi, and two types of beef soups. It's quite a large restaurant, occupying three floors, and even has its own elevator. Its clientele is a mix of older Koreans and tourists visiting the area.
Unlike most barbeque restaurants, where the meat is cooked at your table, the meat here at Jangsu Galbi is cooked in its main kitchen then brought to your table on a cast iron dish shaped like a cow. The meat has a very smoky but sweet flavor and is served with a side of perilla and lettuce leaves, ssamjang sauce, kimchi, and garlic. Rice can be ordered as a side as well. The bulgogi is very heavy and filling, topped with chopped green onions and enoki mushrooms. The galbi comes out already cut, with a well-grilled smokey flavor accentuating its sweet taste. For those who have zero experience grilling Korean barbeque, Jangsu Galbi is one of your best options to sample finely grilled meat without the hassle of having to cook it yourself.
