Tucked away in one of Hongdae's many winding alleys, aA Design Museum is a cafe and art space dedicated to design, furniture, and modern architecture. The building itself looks out of place in the eclectic Hongdae maze; Classical columns, Bauhaus and gothic influences on the facade, with a vintage interior, create a rather peculiar vibe rarely found anywhere else in the area.
Each floor of the museum features a different theme: the second level basement showcases industrial designs; the first level basement showcases mid-century vintage designs, and is home to the aA Life Shop; the second floor features Scandinavian designs; and the third floor features Bauhaus, mid-century vintage, and contemporary design. The giant lobby/main hall of the building is home to a large cafe, perfect for a casual meet-up with friends. Owned by Kim Myung-hwan, a famous vintage furniture collector, the aA Museum is one of the most culturally sophisticated places in Hongdae and it tends to attract more mature bohemian crowds. The basement area often hosts free exhibitions, concerts, and cultural meetings. It's no wonder that aA Design Museum is frequented by famous Korean artists and collectors, including Big Bang's G-Dragon and T.O.P, Zion.T, and many others (who have allegedly even made some contributions to the cafe's interior).
