Gwangju isn't on many tourists' radars, but the city is a must-visit for anyone looking to try the best food Korea has to offer. There are many dishes that are unique to Gwangju and the surrounding area, and Oritang, or duck stew, is one of them. This dish can't be found anywhere else outside the Gwangju metropolitan area, and there is an entire street with over a dozen restaurants serving the dish a stone's throw away from Gwangju Station. Oriyorieui Geori, or Duck Street, has been home to a number of restaurants specializing in Oritang, or duck stew, some of which have been open since the colonial era.
Oritang is a dish unique to the Gwangju area, consisting of an entire duck boiled in a thick broth of dwenjang, ground perilla seeds, chili powder, garlic, and host of other ingredients, topped off with a generous amount of parsley, which helps soak some of the broth. Oritang is considered by those who've tried it to be one of the best foods Korea has to offer, but sadly few make the trek to Gwangju to sample their rich cuisine.
