Drugs and crime are among the major problems of the contemporary society. Previous research has shown that drug use and criminal acts are interrelated. Drugs are linked to crime in different ways and lead to such offenses as robbery, burglary, prostitution, assault, etc. Using drugs itself is an act of crime. Drugs use causes criminal acts because of their pharmacologic influence on people which leads to addiction; also, the way drugs stimulate deviant lifestyle and violence in users results in criminal behavior  https://essays-lab.net/

There are different ways in which drugs use and crime acts are related. First, the act of using, distributing, manufacturing, and possessing drugs is illegal. It is so because people who engage in these actions violate the laws related to prohibition and regulation of drugs use. Such illegal drugs as marijuana, cocaine, amphetamines, and heroin are most frequently used by drug addicts and become a cause of various criminal acts.

Second, drugs cause crime because of their pharmacologic influence on the user. Drugs cause addiction. People who use drugs have the need to frequently buy them that supports their addiction. Therefore, they need money all the time, and since drugs are expensive, drug addicts are likely to steal money and commit other crimes in order to get funds for their addiction.

Third, drug use is connected to criminal acts because of the influence drugs have on the behavior of the drug users. Drugs are associated with deviant behavior. People who use drugs often do not have proper jobs and permanent homes. They commonly have only short-term goals and are not adequately socialized. Drug addicts communicate mostly with other drug users and drug dealers who are prone to criminal activity. The research shows that people who use drugs commit crime more often that the general population. Thus, drugs trigger violence in the users and further lead to criminal behavior.

The research showed that in some cities in the US up to 79% of the arrested males and 75% of arrested females were tested positive for recent drug use. The study found that the highest rates of drug use were among those criminals who were arrested for prostitution, robbery, burglary, and drug distribution. The survey among prison inmates in the US jails showed that about 37% were under the effect of drugs while committing crimes. Among the surveyed inmates, 17% claimed that they committed wrongdoings only to get money and buy more drugs. These results serve as a proof that drug use causes criminal acts.

Since drug use and criminal acts are so tightly interrelated, there are not only cases of criminal acts caused by drugs, but also cases when drug use is caused by criminal acts. For some people who have just committed crime, it is hard to comprehend what happened and what to do next, so these people often start using drugs. For others, the burden of the crime they have committed becomes so unbearable that they resort to drugs. In some instances, it is hard to differentiate whether the drug use was caused by criminal acts or criminal offense was caused by drug use. However, according to the research, in most cases, it is drug use that causes criminal acts and not vice versa.

To conclude, drug use and criminal acts are interrelated in different ways. Drugs cause criminal acts because the very act of using, distributing, manufacturing, and possessing drugs is an act of crime. Apart from that, drugs cause addiction because of their pharmacologic influence on the user. Drug addicts need money to support their addiction; thus, they are likely to resort to robbery or burglary. Moreover, drug use affects the behavior of the drug addict and leads to violence ad deviant lifestyle. The research has shown that drug addicts are more prone to committing crime than people who do not use drugs.
