 Method of delivery


The Foundations of Special Needs Education course consists of:

 

  • Lectures (some of which are recorded),
  • group meetings (blended learning, compulsory attendance) OR online work (online learning, compulsory attendance),
  • exercises: a prepared field visit AND a case study and their reporting in the study group/online work AND written responses for and against an article in a journal on inclusion,
  • essay as individual or group work of 2-3 students.

To complete the course, participation in study group meetings/online work is required. The case assignment and field trip can be done individually, in pairs or small groups. Both assignments require familiarity with the law and its application to the content of the assignment according to the chosen field trip or case study. Group assignments will be assessed by the tutor of the study group on a pass/fail scale. The tutor will notify the names of those who have completed the assignments to the academic secretary for recording. The individual assignments for the course will expire in about two years, so it is advisable to complete all assignments in time.The college paper writing service is completed by writing a 10-12 page essay in a small group of 2-3 students or individually. The essays are assessed numerically on a scale of 0-5 by the class teacher Satu Järvinen and a short written feedback is given.

2. Vehmas, S. 2005. Introduction to the history, theory and ethics of disability. Helsinki: Gaudeamus.
3. Määttä, P. & Rantala, A. 2010 or later. The ordinary special child: approaches to working together. Jyväskylä: PS-Kustannus (also available as an e-book, due to changes in legislation it is recommended to use the revised 2016 edition).

 

The essay is based on the lectures and the following literature:


1. Jahnukainen, M. (ed.) 2012.  Tampere: Vastapaino.
2. Vehmas, S. 2005. Introduction to the history, theory and ethics of disability. Helsinki: Gaudeamus.
3. Määttä, P. & Rantala, A. 2010 or later. The ordinary special child: approaches to working together. Jyväskylä: PS-Kustannus (also available as an e-book, due to changes in legislation it is recommended to use the revised 2016 edition).

4. In addition, other current literature is used as supplementary literature according to the perspective of the essay.

 

Choose the topic of your essay from the following options:


1. Disability/disability in society/school/childhood/adolescence, etc.
2. The individual - subject or object of support?
3.The learner with a difference - educational opportunity, challenge or problem? Explore the possibilities of learning and education for different learners on the basis of the work.
4. vocational special education and training as a leveller of work-life demands and promoter of social inclusion?

 

Carefully and justifiably frame the perspective of your essay within the limits of the topic. Consider the topic from the perspective of a group, individual or age group with special needs (for example, people with sensory impairments, attention deficit or language development difficulties), according to your own interests. Please consider the number of pages in your essay when you are narrowing down the number of pages, as the essay should be able to cover your chosen topic in sufficient depth within the limited number of pages. Title your essay on the basis of your delimitation. Make use of a wide range of source literature in the essay, which may include literature or articles from the 2010s and beyond. Make use of library databases and search online. Use the work provided by Jahnukainen where appropriate, in line with the topic and scope of the essay. You will also find inspiration and ideas for writing your essay in the study visit.
