Population: 1,442,856
Population density: 2,673 /km ©÷ (6,920 /sq mi)
Government: Metropolitan City , Capital of South Chungcheong |

The city is located in the center of South Korea : 167.3 km from Seoul , 294 km from Busan, and 169 km from Gwangju. It is also the gateway between Yeongnam province and Honam province. It is an important place where traffic diverges into two major expressways, the Gyungbu Expressway going to the east and the Honam Expressway to the west. It becomes the hub of national traffic both in name and reality, after the rapid transit railway started operation in April, 2004.
Daejeon is the fifth largest city among South Korea 's top six cities, including Seoul , Busan, Daegu, Incheon, and Gwangju. Its population is 1,390,510 and it covers an area of 539.83 km©÷ at the end of 2000.
The Daejeon area was historically known as Hanbat ( Çѹç ), a native Korean term for "large field", during the Joseon Dynasty. The term "Daejeon" simply means the same thing in Hanja.
Historically, Daejeon was a small village without many residents. However, in 1905, the Gyeongbu railway began operations from Seoul to Busan, opening a station at Daejeon. Soon after, in 1926, under rule of the Japanese government, the Honam railway was built between Daejeon and Mokpo , transforming the latter into a major transportational hub. Because of its geographical location and proximity to means of transportation, Daejeon grew quickly.
In 1932, the capital of Chungnam province moved from Gongju to Daejeon. After numerous changes were made to the city boundaries, among them one that effectively made the nearby town of Daedeok a part of the city in 1983, Daejeon became a metropolitan city in 1995.
In 1997, the Daejeon Government Complex was constructed in order to decentralize the population of South Korea from Seoul . The population of Daejeon increased dramatically as a result.
Today, Daejeon's population growth is the second highest in the country, after Seoul , resulting in a large number of new apartment complex projects and hi-tech industries in Yuseong-gu.
The city is surrounded by four mountains. These mountains are Gyeoryongsan (mountain), Gyejoksan (mountain), Sikjangsan (mountain), and Maninsan (mountain).
The city is also located along three major rivers. They are the Gapcheon, Yudeungcheon, and Daejeoncheon. These rivers help form the basin for the city. The water for the city comes from these three rivers and many small branches of these rivers. All rivers run from south to north, and flow into Geumgang - one of the biggest rivers in South Korea . The city originally developed from farms and houses that were on the hillsides and the valleys between the four mountains and along the three rivers. The three rivers divide the city's five boroughs. |

| ¢Á Hub City of the Southwestern Region of Korea |
Gwangju is the leading city of the Honam region, with the entire nation within a day's reach.
The emerging importance of Korea's western coastline and the government's effort to balance growth across the nation have triggered large-scale urban development projects such as the construction of the Gwangju hi-tech industrial complex, transformation of Gwangju into a center of production, and improvement of housing and leisure facilities.
Such support will boost Gwangju's status as the hub of Korea 's southwest region. |
| |
| ¢Á City of Patriotism |
During the seven-year-long Japanese invasion of Korea beginning in 1592, Gwangju successfully defended itself against the invaders.
Such a tradition, where citizens fought bravely during our nation's crises, has continued throughout history. Citizens sacrificed their lives during the Japanese invasion in 1592, fought against the colonialist Japanese rule in the early 1900's, and again lost many lives during the May 1980 democratic movement in defense of justice, democracy, human rights and freedom.
Gwangju is campaigning to designate May 18 as a national holiday, and completing the effort to designate the May 18 Cemetery as a shrine in homage to the lives sacrificed, to continue its tradition of defending democracy, and to establish its position as part of the democratic history
of the world. |

| ¢Á City of Culture and the Arts |
Gwangju has long been regarded as a city rich in culture and the arts. It has produced numerous scholars renowned for their scholarship and virtue. Gwangju is also where the Southern School of Chinese Painting, or Namjonghwa, as well as pansori, a traditional Korean singing genre, originated.
The level of artistic sophistication is higher than most any other region, with a large proportion of the population involved in the arts field. The humble nature of the people who do not pursue worldly gain has enabled legions of people to enjoy art, dance and music over the years. The Gwangju Biennale, an international arts festival first held in 1995 and taking place every two years, has expanded Gwangju's worldwide reputation as a city of art.
Traditional City of Education
The home of numerous renowned scholars, Gwangju has 584 schools, consisting of 235 kindergartens, 136 elementary schools, 79 middle schools, 61 high schools, 7 junior colleges, 9 universities, 49 graduate schools, and 8 others (as of April 1, 2005) with a total of 415,774 students, or 29.5% of the total city population. The average number of students per household (0.86) reflects the city's characteristic as the home of education. |
