Leesum, Samsung museum of art is proud to introduce one of the most prestigious artwork of korean history. Traditional landscape paintings were the foremost subject that fascinated the eastern intellects of the past. That is no more true for Korean artists. Special exhibition, "Landscape: Realization of Utopia", focuses on the landscape painting of the past to examine the various characteristic of the each artwork, and thereby realize how conceptual landscape artworks have changed over time.
Traditional Korean landscape paintings are called 산수(Sansu:山水). It may depict real mountains and rivers but it also include the landscape of the imaginary utopia. Since the Easterners put emphasis on the accordance of the human life and natural environment, Sansu was a way to show their amenity towards nature. It is no surprise that Sansu was so popular along the centuries.
The exhibition cover various types of landscape paintings; "Sun, Moon and Five Peaks", symbolizing royal authority and dignity; "true-view landscape" paintings by artists such as Jeong Seon; and various types of conceptual landscapes painted at different periods of the Joseon period, The exhibition also presents works from other genres with landscapes as background, as well as landscapes painted with unique materials (e.g., gold pigment) and techniques (e.g., finger painting).
"Sun, Moon and Five Peaks"
This painting is made for the symbolization of the king. It was place behind the royal throne to magnify his authority. The features of the drawing is to wish for the king well-being and the prosperity of the country.
"mountain in the haze"
This artwork depicts the mountains in the break of dawn. The mountains are yet covered in the cloth of fog and haze. With the rampant slightly showing at the bottom of the work. It also shows both characteristic of the early and middle Joseon landscape portraits, so the art is considered to be in the middle of the two periods.
This is art is by Jeong Seon, one of the most famous artist of Joseon dynasty. He emphasized the grandeur figure of the mountain using the ink stick and small brush.
This art has portrayed the magnificent landscape of the Korea's most famous mountain, Gumgang. It great significance due to its various techniques used in the painting.
